The one of a kind festival that is Lollapalooza has dropped itself in the middle of Chicago. The hot, humid sun has never felt so good. Being in the middle of thousand of people never sucked so good. And what matters the most...getting lost in the music..dancing your face off...letting your emotions come out like never before. But don’t forget. Lolla has spread itself like a virus throughout the city and at every venue, every night, there is another memory to be made. Enter Tycho. Concord Music Hall. August 1st.

Tycho aka ISO50 aka Scott Hansen hails from Sacramento, California and has been at the music making thing for nearly 20 years. And he sure as hell does not look 40. Scott started out solo and since Tycho’s inception he has released four ambient, chill, progressive, future-sound, lo-fi albums. Each its own little treasure. The downtempo vibe puts you in the mood to just open your mind and let the music in. Over the years he has gained a dedicated following, but even more so the music speaks for itself. He was nominated for a grammy with his latest effort, Epoch, in 2017.

So let’s set the stage for one of the kick off after shows of Lolla 2018. The venue is sold out. The anticipation throughout the crowd can be felt as the wait seems like forever. But once Scott comes out with his live band, the show kicks off. No need to talk, just let the music speak for itself. And that is much of the beauty as the set goes on. There is no talking, just playing. The tunes start slow and soft, happy and sweet. They reel you in as they move swiftly from song to song. You can see how focused they are on stage, each in their own little zone bringing the crowd every detailed element. Singing? I love a good voice, but the way these tunes are composed there is no need for one. There are no choruses and verses, just a beautiful cinematic approach to their set. The backdrop provides another layer to their show composed of designs and landscapes that match the music. And then it all comes together. Each song it’s own chapter. And all together, a whole story is told. A unique experience that you all need to go see in your own.

alex wiley | photo cred: noisey.vice.com

Mr. alex wiley is part of the next wave of Chicago hip hop, aka hip hop in general. Last I checked the scene is better than the Golden State Warriors (96’ Bulls forever!) It all started at a very young age for Alex as he began music by playing the violin (reminds me of when I played flute in 3rd grade...please don’t tell anyone). This of course, made complete sense as he transitioned to his hip hop career. I know, totally makes sense. That is just the thing with these young musicians who are getting started super early. They have the chance to evolve their ears, open boundaries and become that one of a kind artist. It is also a plus when every other hip hop artist in Chicago is showing the same sort of talent.

He is only 23 and has one of the most unique vocals in the game. Even sweeter, his flow is extremely impressive for a young artist.  You can easily catch his range of beats, keyboard, slow to fast from tracks like “vibration” to “paris freestyle.” Just from taking a glance at some of the titles of his tracks, yes, he is a ridiculous freestyle rapper. The way he can string verses together without taking a breath as well as changing speeds, is quite impressive. Slot this dude in your chill hip hop playlists and let the diverse range of tunes take you to the next stage of hip hop.

GANG OF YOUTHS

reppin: Sydney, Australia - Mosy Records

sounds like: a calming walk down the beach with a well timed array of fireworks (the ones that make cool designs) going off

latest record: the positions (2015)

You are going to find a ton of Aussie as this blog gets rolling because they are just destroying the music scene one kangaroo at a time. As for these cats, first, you’ll be reeled in by lead singer David Le’aupepe’s luscious vocals...you can feel the emotion in his edgy voice. Then the rhythmic guitars and perfectly positioned riffs take over to give you that warming sensation (i’ll leave this open to interpretation). The six minute ballads and slow builds throughout a majority of their songs are powerful and will have you wishing you were at their concert melting your face.

All in all, their latest 10 song album entitled The Positions is sensationally brilliant. It will take you to both ends of the indie spectrum with the likes of the soft and soothing “Kansas” to the head banger Poison Drum. They’ve already played alongside the like of MS MR, Smith Westerns(RIP) and have the potential to pack stadiums as they mature. Say it with me: “COME TO THE STATES GOD DAMMIT!”

fun fact: They refer to their style of music as “dad rock,” which should officially be recognized as a sub-genre of rock

suggested listening experience: wake up your office on a Monday morning // weird out some folks by pretending to drum or rock the axe on your morning commute // get a good pregame started with these solid indie-rockers
